Are You Eating QUINOA? (pronounced keen-wá)
We supply quinoa that is grown on Australian soil! Our quinoa is a low food miles crop that is grown, harvested, polished and packed all on the certified organic Daman family farm, on the North-West coast of Tasmania.
The majority of quinoa on supermarket shelves is imported from Bolivia. Besides the enormous energy footprint to get this crop to your plate, sadly quinoa, one of Bolivia’s basic staple foods, has seen such a huge spike in overseas demand that eating quinoa is becoming unaffordable for the local population.
So make sure you are eating Australian grown!
For all the Grain-a-Phobs! (yes I made that word up)…
Quinoa is a seed, not a grain so it is gluten free! Packed full of protein, this highly nutritious plant is actually a relative of spinach and beets. Quinoa is rich in essential amino acids, vitamin B2, E, A and contains more iron than any other grain (probably because it’s a seed! ;)).
NOTE: In its natural state quinoa has a coating that tastes very bitter (sapponin). So make sure you wash it well before cooking! Wash and stir 3 or 4 times in water, or wash until water is clear. Never soak quinoa before washing. The bitterness will be absorbed by the seed and you will never get the bitterness out.
