This recipe is one of my kids favourite dinners! Plus… they are FABULOUS for kids parties (and adults too of course ;)).
If buying pastry… pleeeease ensure you buy quality ‘butter puff’ pastry and not the cheaper versions which are full of nasty nasty trans fats. I also do a Mountain Bread version, which makes this recipe much quicker (but not quite so yummy ;)).
You will need a good food processor to make this.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 piece of bread/50g processed into fresh crumbs (I use a slice of sourdough)
- 1 clove Garlic, processed (or crushed)
- 1 Onion (chopped finely)
- 100g Walnuts
- 100g Rolled Oats
- 3 Eggs
- 150g Goats or Feta Cheese
- 1 Tbspn Tamari Sauce
- 2 Tbspn dried Thyme (or other dried herbs)
- 2 Tbspn Sunflower Seeds
- 2 Tbspn Sesame Seeds
- 3 sheets of Butter Puff Pastry / or 6 pieces of Mountain Bread
METHOD
- Process the bread and then set aside.
- Chop the garlic and onion finely by hand or in processor
- Add in all other ingredients except for the sunflower and sesame seeds. Process until chopped and mixed well.
- Stir in the sunflower seeds. Lay out your puff pastry sheets (they are easiest to work with when they are slightly thawed, before they get too sticky). Cut each sheet in half.
- Divide your mixture evenly between the six pieces.
Fold over bringing edges together and seal with a fork.
- Brush over milk and sprinkle on sesame seeds.
- Cut into small pieces (for ‘party’ rolls) or leave longer for a dinner roll.
- Bake for 20-25mins (until brown) on 200 degrees Celsius.
- Serve with a nice big coleslaw or lettuce salad.
NOTE: If you make these with Mountain Bread… put the mix along with edge and then roll the Bread sheet. Flatten slightly and then brush over with milk and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Cut in half. Very quick! They still look good too… see picture here:
I made these today. They were so good. Taste and smell delicious, and I think I can fool my son into thinking they have meat in them 🙂
Hi Alli… haha…. it is sooo true – I don’t believe there’s a single child out there that would know it’s not meat! Great for kids parties – sliced into mini ‘sausage’ rolls before baking.
I’m planning on trying a vegan version, by replacing the feta with ‘cashew cheese’ – which I think will be just as good, fingers crossed!
